BACKGROUND. Nathan belongs to a covert group of agents whose sole purpose of existence is to determine the balance of power in the world they live in. Known as the Cecilians, after the Sicilian Defense, their organization's agents are raised on the belief that every action must be done with the greater good in mind. Each agent is given a "gift" - a preternatural skill or talent that aids them in their duties. These gifts are typified as either "white" (benign/creative) and "black" (malignant/destructive), and led by two queens and two kings, each one with their own plans and objectives. Collectively, the organization has tasked itself with protecting the world from itself, but not every Cecilian is as noble as their leaders hope they would be. HISTORY. Nathan was adopted by the fourteenth Black Queen when he was six. Though initially against Nathan's joining the organization as an agent, Nathan's physical and intellectual aptitude made him highly compatible with a gift. The Black Queen relented under pressure from the other leaders, and Nathan was put through training at the age of fourteen. He was advanced from cadet to agent at the age of twenty-one, and then assigned to the eighteenth Black King, who Nathan suspects of malicious intent and does not trust. PERSONALITY. Nathan is sullen, moody, and smartalecky - almost like he didn't grow out of adolescence. This would be mostly right; Nathan doesn't do well around other people because of the nature of his gift, which was given to him in his first year of training. Nathan's gift manifested as neurotoxins in his body; his whole body is poisonous, and most of his training focused on controlling the toxicity/neutrality levels present in and on him at any given time. Because of this, Nathan grew up not having very many friends, and he kept the habit even after he gained control of when and how his poisons come in play. He isn't afraid of his gift; he also doesn't really buy into the alleged altruism of the organization, but Alena, the fourteenth Black Queen and his only family, truly believes - and he follows dutifully to honor her, if not the organization. |
